Mind Mapping: Information

Mind Mapping/Graphic Organizer Software

DeepaMehta (free, open-source software)

The Mind Map concept was developed by Tony Buzan in the late 1960s. I first learned about Mind Maps from Peak Learning by Ron Gross. I was starting my Master of Social Work program at LSU in Baton Rouge. I started mapping my notes -- I completely stopped taking linear notes and relied exclusively on mind maps for my first semester. I brought a sketch pad and colored pens to class and drew mind maps in class. I also mind mapped each chapter of my textbooks. The result was straight A grades that semester. About three months after I started using the mind map technique I found I could clearly recall the shapes and colors of my mind maps during exams and easily write my essay questions.

I require students to use mind maps in my classes. A student who approaches this technique with an open mind and gives it a chance will be rewarded with a powerful study technique that will save time over the long run.
